7 Common Tajweed Mistakes (And How to Fix Them)
2026-05-14 · 8 min read
From rushed ghunnah to swallowed qalqalah — the errors teachers hear most, with practical drills for each.
Shortening the madd
Natural madd should be held for two counts consistently. Most self-taught readers rush it. Record yourself reading Surah Al-Fatiha and count aloud on playback.
Skipping ghunnah timing
Ghunnah needs roughly two counts of nasal sound. Practise idgham with ghunnah words slowly and exaggerate before normalising.
Weak qalqalah
The qalqalah letters need a distinct echo when sakin. Isolate them at the end of ayaat and drill them one word at a time.
Confusing similar makharij
Letters such as ha and haa, or seen and saad, need deliberate articulation practice with a teacher who can hear the difference in real time.
